Artist Statement
My name is Nadeane Friend, many know me as Nay or Naynay. I am an abstract poetic artist based in Long Beach, born in Queens, New York. Why do I make art? I would have to say, I paint to capture the raw emotion and soul in people and nature. My mission is to honor the life force in everything I paint. Whether I am capturing the truth behind a woman’s eyes or the patterns of a crashing wave, my art is a rejection of the superficial and a search for depth. I don't paint just to decorate a wall; I paint to express that we are part of something greater.
I call my work “Abstract Poetic Art” because I paint the way I write poetry, passionate, no predetermined destination, just raw feeling, instinct, flowing in the moment with the subconscious leading the way. It is a place where intentional painting creates visual poetry without words. I think of it as the art of the narrative told through color. Each mark is a verse, allowing a visual message to emerge organically. Free verse has no rules, no boundaries. It flows from a stream of consciousness. Every piece I make I see as a paint poem.
My work spans multiple mediums and surfaces, bringing original art into everyday life. I work slowly and intentionally. I live with the piece, walk away, then come back hours, days, or weeks later with fresh eyes and a better understanding of what the work needs. Most undergo a transformation that begins in disorder, which I call the birthing or even the ugly stage. There could be an entirely different painting beneath what you see. I remove, I rework, I re-add. I trust the process that the piece will transform into a beautiful version of itself, or simply the final version it was meant to be.
My background is a blend of formal education and self-directed discovery. I hold a master's degree in education and am certified to teach art from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Despite structured training, my practice is rooted in intuitive painting. I don’t formally plan or do preliminary sketching. It’s more like, let’s see what happens, but not rushed. Creating is a practice of alignment, a way of bringing my soul into the world and leaving space for others to find something of their own within it.
The limited edition prints I offer are categorized into three sections: pure abstract, ocean inspirations, and female essence. I just paint subjects that feel alive, and over time, my body of work has fit into these three categories. The common theme running through them is color and style, yes, but more so, the emotion and intention behind the work.
I believe life is sacred and that our surroundings should reflect the spirit, not just the material world. I paint abstract, human form, and nature to affirm that there is more to life than what we can consume or materially gain. Every piece, from large to small, is meant to awaken thought and stir emotion. I provide collectors with art infused with colorful energy and a sense of shared meaning for their personal spaces.
When you bring a piece of my work into your space, you add a layer of authenticity to it. There is something meaningful about choosing art with intention. Choosing an original painting or fine art print from an independent artist offers a handmade touch and a sense of distinction to your home. Art chosen with care has a way of becoming part of your own story.
