Artist Statement
My name is Nadeane Friend, many know me simply as Naynay. I am an abstract poetic artist based in Long Beach, New York. I paint to capture the raw emotion of people and organic forms of nature. My mission is to honor the life force in everything I paint. Whether I am capturing the truth behind a woman’s eyes or the patterns of a crashing wave, my art is a rejection of the superficial and a search for depth. I don't paint to decorate a wall; I paint to express that we are part of something greater. I create for the person who understands that life is sacred and that our surroundings should reflect the spirit, not just the material world.
My fascination lies not in appearances but in the spiritual significance behind them. I paint abstract human form and nature to confirm that there is more to life than what we can consume or gain materially. Every piece, from a large-scale canvas to a smaller object for the home, is meant to awaken thought and stir emotion. I provide collectors with art infused with colorful energy and a sense of shared meaning for their personal spaces.
I call my work “Abstract Poetic Art” because I paint the way I write poetry, passionate, no predetermined destination, just raw feeling, instinct, flowing in the moment with the subconscious leading the way. It is a place where intentional painting creates visual poetry without words. I think of it as the art of the narrative told through color. Each mark is a verse, allowing a visual message to emerge organically. Free verse has no rules, no boundaries, and neither does my painting. It flows from a stream of consciousness, but on canvas or paper. Every piece is a paint poem.
My work spans multiple mediums and surfaces, bringing original art into everyday life. My process is a slow and intentional journey. I live with the piece, walk away, then come back hours, days, or weeks later with fresh eyes and a better understanding of what the work needs. Most of my pieces undergo a transformation that begins in disorder, which I call the birthing stage. There could be an entirely different painting that lived underneath what you see. I remove, I rework, I re-add. I trust the process that the piece will transform into a beautiful version of itself, or simply the final version it was meant to be.
I choose subjects that feel alive, women with stories, and nature with rhythm. In my art, you will experience elements of earth, water, wind, and fire. At times, the imagery feels aerial and expansive; at other times, it zooms in, focusing on color and texture at an intimate scale.
Much of my creative output is dedicated to portraying expressive female forms. The essence of the women I paint carries deep symbolism. They are reflections of observations and lived experiences, of survival, pain, transformation, joy, and strength. I feel their eyes are the most powerful feature, giving each painting a story to hold.
My background is a blend of formal education and self-directed discovery. I hold a master's degree in education and am certified to teach art from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Despite structured training, my practice is rooted in intuitive painting.
My process is characterized by spontaneity and a hypnotic flow rather than formal planning or preliminary sketching. It is a powerful, obsessive focus and a passionate endeavor that serves as a form of meditation, a prayer, and a way to connect with something greater than myself. Creating is a practice of alignment, a way of bringing my soul into the world and leaving space for others to find something of their own within it.
When you bring a piece of my work into your space, you add a layer of authenticity to it. There is something meaningful about choosing art with intention. Choosing an original painting or fine art print from an independent artist offers a handmade touch and a sense of distinction to your home. Art chosen with care has a way of becoming part of your own story.
Should you have questions regarding a specific artwork, whether it be a larger size print or a framing alternative, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am also available for consultations and commissioned work. I value connecting with others and would love to hear from you.
